NotesA pure bred Turkey Oak unlike the two Lucombesque hybrids in the park.  Imported into Britain in the 17th century as part of an experiment to replace the dwindling stock of English Oak for building warships and houses, but the timber was found to split too easily.  It was suitable for cutting into veneer which was used in much of the oak panelling in expensive houses that was fashionable.  Along with a Cork Oak, one was the hybrid parent for the Lucombe Oak.  More about Turkey Oak if you click here.info
