The first of this year’s young trees are in the ground.
The 2,000 tree whips supplied by National Highways through the Tree Council were delivered to Farway Common this week. To protect the roots from drying out they were ‘heeled in’ today, dug into a temporary planting site in their bundles. As today is the last day of the official National Tree Week, we decided to plant about 200 as a start to the wildlife hedgerow that they will become. The main planting will be next weekend, starting at 10.00 on the Saturday morning, 7th December, more details on the events page. Do come and help for an hour or more, it is good for you and good for the environment.
Apart from being a mixed wildlife hedge, the hedge will will be a part of the River Sid Catchment Group’s plan to attenuate, slow down, the run off from the hilltops into the river system after heavy rain. The Farway site used to be lowland heath and it is waterlogged for much of the winter. You could hear the squelching as volunteers worked their spades in the ground, listen to the video.
More tree whips will be going in at the Knapp Nature Reserve tomorrow, Monday 2nd and Gilchrist Field soon afterwards.
