Three years ago the Town Council challenged the Arboretum to plant 14,000 young trees, one for every person who lives in the valley with a few spares for visitors. The target was to be completed by the end of 2026.
The project evolved and linked with the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group and River Sid Catchment Group for the young trees to form hedgerows that act as habitat and movement corridors for wildlife and attenuation hedges to slow the flow of rain run off to reduce flood risks.
Today the volunteers planted nearly 750 tree whips at Cotford which brings the total to 14,300, and more than 2.8km of new hedgerow. All this a whole year early.
Having reached the target, we aren’t stopping. More planting at Stoney Orchard on 4th January and then Farway Common Airfield in the spring.
